What happens when you mix 100 drones, LED’s, a bunch of programmers and a live orchestra? A world record of course! Dubbed Drone 100, it’s a creation which Intel pulled together to demonstrate how drones can create enchanting experiences. Although this sort of demonstration isn’t new, it is the first to do it on this scale.

It comes in light of Intel’s recent acquisition of german drone technology provider Ascending Technologies. The demonstration used 100 AscTec Hummingbirds. These were equipped with LEDs and nicknamed Spaxels. The team behind it, programmed the drones to fly formation while changing the colours of the LED’s. The experience has been likened to fireworks but without the risk. Part of this demonstration is to set the scene for what Intel is planning next: “Now they are getting new human-like senses, so they can see and react intelligently, in real-time to obstacles in their environment. This will open up new, creative ways for using UAVs.”
